It is common to experience the side effects of abortion pills after having a medical abortion. However, if these side effects do not reduce within a day or two, or if they are severe, you should seek medical attention immediately.

Medical abortion is simply another term for abortion pills. Abortion procedures are of two types: medical abortion and surgical abortion. Medical abortion is performed by using the abortion pill. However, you should use two types of abortion pills for this procedure. These pills terminate a pregnancy but are not the same as the “emergency contraceptive pills,” which are used to prevent pregnancy.

You must take Mifepristone and Misoprostol together to induce a medical abortion. When both medicines are taken together, the abortion is more effective, and the duration of side effects is reduced.1 In India, both pills are usually sold as part of a kit. Some well-known brands are — Unwanted Kit, Mifegest Kit, etc.

Side effects of abortion pills:

The common side effects of abortion pills are:

  • Some of the common symptoms include — nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness, and dizziness. If these side effects last more than 24 hours after taking the second medicine (misoprostol), get medical attention immediately because they may indicate a severe medical problem.
  • It is common to experience bleeding and cramps after taking the abortion pills. Be prepared to have these symptoms. They usually indicate that the medications are working properly. Yet, in certain situations, you may still be pregnant and experience cramps and bleeding. You must go to all follow-up appointments with your doctor. Nausea and cramps may become more severe 24 hours following the second pill (misoprostol). Your doctor may prescribe another medication to relieve these symptoms. If these side effects persist, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
  • If you get a fever of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius), faint, have a fast heartbeat, or have stomach pain after taking an abortion pill, seek medical attention immediately.
  • It is quite rare for these medicines to cause a life-threatening reaction. However, if you notice any symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, such as a rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), extreme dizziness, or breathing problems, then consult a doctor immediately.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you are having a medical abortion and are not experiencing the following symptoms but feel uncomfortable in any way, please do not ignore it and contact your doctor immediately.2

The benefits of abortion pills are:

  • It may appear as a more natural method.
  • You can get one as soon as you know you’re pregnant.
  • There is no need for anesthesia or surgery.

The disadvantages of abortion pills are:

  • There may be severe and painful bleeding for a few days.
  • After nine to eleven weeks of pregnancy, this procedure can’t be carried out (determined by your doctor).
  • It takes a longer duration of time.
